So, I started playing an online multiplayer game called Evony about a month or so ago and I can honestly say that I am still addicted. Evony is a seriously massive environment where players battle it out for resources in the form of controlling valleys and building cities. The game really encourages players to form an alliance and battle it out with other alliances, which is by far the most fun part of the game. Joining an alliance also has the added benefit of sharing resources within the game, sharing knowledge about the game, and protection against enemy players.
Evony is a bit different than any other online game that I have played in that it does require a lot of time since some buildings and upgrades take days to acquire. And, you can only build or upgrade one thing at a time, per city. However, this has become one of the nice parts of the game. This dimension of the game along with the alliances and limited resources makes it an amazingly strategic game. You can't just go around attacking everyone, you have to think many moves in the future, amass resources, and carefully plan your attack.
Evony also lets you obtain special items that let you enhance many parts of your game. You can instantly upgrade a building, instantly receive resources, obtain a small army, enhance your resource production, and much more. You are given an 'amulet' every day that you play that is used in the 'wheel of chance' and you are randomly given one of these special items. Or, players can use real money to buy game cents that is then used to buy whatever items they need. Now, buying these game cents can really help and enhance your progression in the game, but is by no means necessary at all. It seems like more than half of the players don't ever purchase the game cents and are just as competitive as the players that do.
At first the expansive game universe and many dimensions of the game can be overwhelming. However, the interface is extremely easy to use and the game itself is really easy to learn. There really is no one right way to play the game and to build your empire.
I'm not saying that the game doesn't have it's flaws. I find the medal drop rates (medals are required to obtain a promotion and expand your empire) are a bit erratic and low. I also would hope for some added functions in the future, such as a task que so that you can have your empire keep building and upgrading as you sleep or have to be inactive. And, maybe a way to sell your own items or swap them with other players.
Evony was launched this May, 2009 and has been a hit right out of the gates. The game play has been flawless, the competition has been addictive, and the players have been very nice and classy. I encourage everyone to give this game a look, if you're into these sorts of online, multiplayer games. And even if you're not into them but thought this article sounds interesting, check it out. I started playing because I have some decent down time at work everyday and I've loved my experience.
If you're interested in trying the game, go to Evony - Best Free Web Game (http://www.evony.com) and register. It's free to play and very easy to sign up and get going. And, you newbies, don't worry about getting attacked right when you start and are figuring out the game. You get a nice period of protection time where you can't be bothered, it's enough to get yourself built up and defended before the battle begins!
