I recently heard that DA Hurlbert is up for re-election, so he could be using this case as a way to get votes. I read this at www.welovekobe.com.
July 22, 2003-
District Attorney Mark Hurlbert is in a very sensitive situation. He was appointed to his position several years ago by Governor Bill Owens. Mark Hurlbert was appointed to the Office of District Attorney in the Fifth Judicial District. Hurlbert filled a vacancy caused by the resignation of District Attorney Michael Goodbee.
Governor Bill Owens was responsible for filling the district attorney vacancy, because a sitting district attorney resigned before the elected term had expired. The Governor appointment Mark Hurlbert and the term of this appointment will be until the next general election in 2004. The vacancy will then be filled by election.
In my opinion it would have been very difficult for DA Hurlbert not to have filed charges on Kobe Bryant. I believe it would have been political suicide. The sad thing about this whole situation is that Da Hurlbert now must aggressively move forward in this very high profile case, and in the process Kobe Bryant is virtually fighting for his life.
