Well, since this is a TRAVEL section, I thought I would start this thread.

Just curious how many people have traveld abroad? Over seas? Out of country? Away from the mother land?

I spent time in the US Navy and got to travel around the world.
I was on a ship in San Diego, and traveld to Japan, the Phillipine Islands, Singapore, and Australia.
I was stationed in Southern Germany (Augsburg) for two years and spent 30 days traveling through Europe.
I spent Six months in Bahrain.

I love to see new places and meet new people. Try new foods and new beers.

My favorite was Germany.
How about you?

While I've been in the army I've been stationed in Tacoma, Washington and Fayetteville, North Carolina. I've been deployed to Afghanistan, Iraq, Bosnia, and spent 3 weeks training in England. I grew up as an Army brat so we lived in Heidelberg and Baumholder, Germany and all over the US. England was my favorite by far, although i wasn't old enough to have any real fun in Germany.

Travel - definitely a great thing to do! I was also in the navy, albeit merchant navy and worked on a cruise ship, so I have been lucky enough to see lots of different countries and places in all seven continents. Normally you don't get much further than the port you have stopped at but it gives you a good idea whether it is worth going back on holiday (vacation!). My favourites have to be Easter Island, St.Petersburg in Russia (beautiful girls everywhere and cheap cd's dvd's), Thailand, and if I could speak Spanish Buenos Aries was very vibrant and full of young people! Papete, Tahiti was over rated but the other side of the island looked nice, Bora Bora was nice, and Australia and New Zealand also had great bits!

I heard somewhere that quite a large percentage of Americans don't have passports - which I think is a real shame but the USA is quite varied so plenty to see and do at home I guess!

I been all over the states, and would at some point like to visit all 50 (I only have 5 or 6 to go) and to several places in Canada and Mexico. As for places you need a passport to get to, I've been to:

London
Paris
Bangkok
Venice
Milan
Cervinia, Italy (small mountain village with amazing skiing, it's the Italian side of the Matterhorn)

It's hard to pick a favorite, as all had things I loved. I guess Veice and Bangkok are the places I'd most like to go back to, though there's a lot of other places I'd like to go before I start to repeat.

Fully agree that traveling is a very good thing for one's character. I am excited cause although I've had the opportunity to travel in the West, I'll be able to travel for 1st time to China this summer. I'm psyched!

Any comments, forewarnings?

China's a tough country if you don't have any of the language. I lived there for six months. Top tips:

Don't eat any of that meat on a stick that's sold everywhere.
If someone wants you to look at an "art exhibition" it's a scam.
If it sounds like a scam, it probably is.
Don't drink the tap water.

I took a trip with my highschool German class to Germany a few years back. It was awesome, however we stayed in Southern Germany, and visited Innsbruck, Austria, Lucern, Switzerland, Lichtenstein......I had a wonderful time, that area of the world is absolutely beautiful. I would have loved to completely stayed in Germany and gone north to visit Berlin. Ah, goodtimes.....Getting wasted with your German teacher and her hot daughter every night, and visiting a beautiful country during the day.....I really wanna go back sometime soon!

Hey everyone - 1st post...

Traveling outside the US is the best thing you can do to broaden your horizons. It's pretty cool to see the world from an outsiders' points of view.

I've gotten to go to some great places...

Europe - UK, France, Germany, Spain, Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Turkey, Portugal
Australia - Melbourne, Sydney, the North Coast and Great Barrier Reef
South and Central America - Belize, Mexico, Guatemala
and a short trip into North Africa

I recently heard from many people that Croatia is the best undiscovered destination in Eastern Europe. Supposedly it's cheap, devoid of tourists, and amazing. I can't wait to get an excuse to skip over the Atlantic and take a little sejour over there yonder!

Any of y'all been there?

First trip overseas was last year. Went to Stavanger (Norway), Amsterdam, and Aberdeen (Scotland). This year I made it to Rome, Bologna, Ravenna, and Venice (Italy). All on business I might add....

Looks I may be going to Oman this year and possibly Germany.

I've also been to Cancun and Acapulco, and Toronto...

St. Lucia in November.

Traveling is great, but being away from home too much can be a drag sometimes.

Outside of the U.S. I have been to England (York, Helmsley & London), Austria (Linz & Vienna), Switzerland (Zurich and Gimmelwald), Mexico (Cancun, Chitzin Itza, Puebla), Costa Rica (Manuel Antonio NP, Braulio Carrillo NP, San Ramon, and built a house in Tres Rios with Habitat for Humanity).
My favorite cities were York, England and Vienna, Austria. The countryside of the Yorkshire Moors (Helmsley) are fantastic as are the Alps near Gimmelwald (Eiger, Monch & Jungfrau).
Of all the places I have been Costa Rica is in a class by itself. The beaches at Manuel Antonio are the most beautiful I have ever seen with the rainforest cascading right down to the beach and the Atlantic rainforest in Braulio Carrillo NP is amazing as well, as are all the volcanoes within a short driving distance from anywhere in the central valley. The people (ticos & ticas) are incredibly friendly.

Croatia was the place to go for all those out there backpackers about 2-3 years ago, now everyone is going there thanks to a lot of television travel shows writing it up so much. Prices are increasing as there are in a lot of Western/Eastern Europe by this I mean Czech Rep, Slovenia, Croatia and Slovakia. Although they are still extremely cheap by our standards, the new frontiers are further east, with Estonia, Ukraine, Belarus and Russia.
Also places like Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Mongolia.

Dont know if any of you knew or heard about this, but Steve Irwin did a documentary on Antartica (still a place you are not allowed to go without tours etc) and swam and played with the animals, he was in huge trouble with conversations and the Australian government as it is illegal but being the Crocodile Hunter managed to get off.

I've been to Philippines also. We had a 12 hour road trip with my friends from Manila to Ilocos. We stayed at Fort Ilocandia Resort & Casino. The ambiance of the place was definitely great and the atmosphere too while the service they have given to us was very warming. We were all excited how the place looks like and the food were also great. You can do a lot of things there. Their facilities are: Archery, Shooting Range, Paint Ball, Horse Riding, Driving Range, Hot Air Balloon, All Terrain Vehicle, Tennis, Fishing, Beach Volley Ball, Jet Ski, Banana Boat, Sea Donut, Kayak, Snorkling, Scuba, Parasailing,
Body board & Pool Toys, Beach/Poolside Massage, Hot Sand Spa, Horse Drawn Carriage, and Pedalo/Boating.
