Tiger if what you have are AVI files, I'd recommend a (free) program called VirtualDub, that you can find linked at that web site I posted above.

It's a 3-step process to extract the audio from the AVI, then you can encode it to mp3 or whatnot with whatever encoder you currently use for such things.

There are complete instructions on that site, but if this is your situation I can probably answer most of your questions here.

If you are trying to pull audio from another kind of file...well go to this link:

Tools - Video software list (http://www.videohelp.com/tools?toolsearch)

...and in the "tool features" dropdown menu, find "XXX to MP3" (where "XXX" is your video file type) and the search will return a shitload of available programs to do what you want to do.

as an afterthought here, you can use "audacity" to record whatever is coming from your speakers

all you do is open up the program and choose to record the stereo out feed... click record, and then whatever comes through your speakers is recorded.

pretty nice for snatching audio from ANYTHING, and it's so simple that anyone can do it- I record audio tracks from youtube videos all the time with it

audacity:
Audacity: Download (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/)

a video tutorial showing you exactly what to do and how to do it:
YouTube - How to use Audacity to record audio. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9_pSLG0LZQ)

The video tutorial explains how to record youtube audio, but if you can record youtube audio, you can record anything that is playing through your speakers (or headphones for that matter).

Note: This doesn't work on all sound cards in windows vista. Microsoft realized that people could record whatever they wanted and got some manufacturers to close the "hole" that allowed this. Windows XP is perfectly fine, though- only SOME vista machines have trouble as far as I know.

If you are a Firefox user, there a many add-ons for downloading from streaming video sites.

A quick search for add-ons & you will find a good one, unless of course you're on IE...in which case nevermind :)
