Is it possible to change the bitrate of my DirecTV box?

I have a 61" Samsung TV, and am wondering if I can change the bitrate of the box for better performance (picture). Mabye I just need to take the plunge and go with a HD system. :(

The HD plunge is well worth it, especially if you can get OTA reception of your local stations.
