I'm a sceptic now, says ex-NASA climate boss

The retired scientist formerly in charge of key NASA climate programs has come out as a sceptic.

Dr John Theon, who supervised James Hansen - the activist-scientist who helped give the manmade global warming hypothesis centre prominent media attention - repents at length in a published letter. Theon wrote to the Minority Office at the Environment and Public Works Committee on January 15, 2009, and excerpts were published by skeptic Senator Inhofe's office here last night.

"As Chief of several of NASA Headquarters’ programs (1982-94), an SES position, I was responsible for all weather and climate research in the entire agency, including the research work by James Hansen, Roy Spencer, Joanne Simpson, and several hundred other scientists at NASA field centers, in academia, and in the private sector who worked on climate research," Theon wrote. "I appreciate the opportunity to add my name to those who disagree that global warming is man made.”

Theon takes aim at the models, and implicitly criticises Hansen for revising to the data set:

“My own belief concerning anthropogenic climate change is that the models do not realistically simulate the climate system because there are many very important sub-grid scale processes that the models either replicate poorly or completely omit. Furthermore, some scientists have manipulated the observed data to justify their model results. In doing so, they neither explain what they have modified in the observations, nor explain how they did it.

"They have resisted making their work transparent so that it can be replicated independently by other scientists. This is clearly contrary to how science should be done. Thus there is no rational justification for using climate model forecasts to determine public policy.”

Hansen is in charge of the GISS data set, derived from readings published by NOAA. The GISS adjustment have received criticism (a potted summary here) for revising the historic record in an upward direction - and making undocumented and unexplained revisions.

Theon also takes issue with Hansen's claim that he was suppressed by NASA officialdom, and states that the science didn't support Hansen's increasingly apocalyptic warnings of an imminent thermageddon.

“Hansen was never muzzled even though he violated NASA's official agency position on climate forecasting (i.e., we did not know enough to forecast climate change or mankind's effect on it). Hansen thus embarrassed NASA by coming out with his claims of global warming in 1988 in his testimony before Congress."

Hansen has called for energy industry executives to be jailed for dissenting from the man-made warming hypothesis. ®

Wow...

Oh boy, is this goiing to open up a can of worms or what? (I expect doubleeez to post here in 3...2...1...lol)

Somehow I'm not at all surprised Theon is backing away from what I've always observed to be at best subjective conclusions regarding "climate change" and the computer models.

Ironically, that's what we used to say to you guys that bought into this crap. Now that more and more people are coming out about it, you guys are tired of discussing it. I thought you all knew everything and quoted every scientist in the world at us and called us all delusional for not buying into things. Buzz words, man. You call us victims of the machine and yet there goes your "proof" I mean, I could have sworn people threw definitions around, questioned everyone's intelligence, and even called others names because we simply refused to drink the koolaid....ooh I better stop, now I'm tossing around meaningless buzz words too. :juan:

Some folks have been very vocal about this subject; most vocal are those believing this is a true problem and emergency. In the last few years, more scientists, etc. have stepped up to say more information is needed.

Maybe those polarized folks will stay on opposite ends of this subject and give those in the middle ground some time to analyze, experiment, hypothesize, and test ideas. Maybe this will help develope a theory, pro or con.

I still think it is rather humorous that on the first day of the Meeting concerning Global Warming, Al Gore and his crew canceled the day due to the "Frigid" temperatures!!!

LOL!!!

And last years average temperature for the USA was 1.1 degrees cooler!!!!!

HAHAhahaha!!!!

No, you're right I remember that quite vividly as well.

Guess the koolaid is losing it's flavour.

You conservatives can continue to jerk each other off as long as you want, and support/deny whatever you want. I just don't really see the point in discussing these sorts of ideas/issues any longer. Hardly anyone really budges from their point of view, and ultimately, the thread ends up getting derailed, or closed. More often than not, it's closed because you just don't like what's being said.

Krasch will come in and tell everyone with a more "liberal" point of view that they are wrong, everyone else who sides with him will agree. Then, point-counterpoint arguments will start. The whole time each side refusing to give the other sides argument any credit. It's pretty fucking pointless. This forum is dominated by conservatives anyway, so there's very little reason for someone who has different views to debate you guys. As evidenced by ddoubleez and his being laughed at all the time, and to some extent me as well.

I rarely come in here and discuss anything any longer for these very reasons. If you guys want to continue, go for it. I'm sure Obama threads such as the two already in the EOTH will be more, and more prevalent as time goes on. I just don't really like talking to someone who absolutely refuses to see the other side. I will admit, I am somewhat guilty of this myself. Can you conservatives say the same? I'm too busy most of the time for this shit anyway, I'd much rather just look at the naked chicks in the hotness.

Meow meow meow meow....

So nothing? No more? You guys threw in the towel? Why? I mean we all used to tell you that not all scientist backed your propaganda. We all used to tell you to not believe the hype. Now more and more scientists (since I guess I didn't count as a scientist for some people around here) are telling you too much was left out of these studies and now you are sick of the discussion. What did you guys do, find another forum where this wasn't discussed as much and started annoying them?

So truce? lol okay.

Man made global warming is a myth. Al Gore is nuttier than a fruitcake. I took a lot of hell for stating both of those things earlier. This is what we call poetic justice. That's my two cents. I will also say again, thank God, Obama didn't appoint Gore to any major government position in his new administration.

By the way, Gore should voluntarily give back his Nobel Peace Prize so a deserving person can get it.
