You watch the evening news or read the local paper and a large number of law breakers have Hispanic names. I know there are hard working Hispanics in the US, some are even here legally, but why can't they keep the worst of them out of the media?

I think that social conditions play a lot into crime. Blacks and Hispanics are more likely to come from poorer, less educated backgrounds. People raised in more affluent areas might get nailed with insider trading, but they don' show that from a helicopter for 2 hours, until the cops beat the hell out of him.

The media shows those names that will get the public heated up more then other's.

I have to agree with the other posters here. Besides their reasons, immigration is a hot topic. The media plays with what is hottest and immigration is on the front burner.

For shock value, mainly.

Granted, hispanic immigrants, legal or not, are most often associated with lower income and uneducated socioeconomic statuses. These people are more prone to crime (statisticaly and only in certain areas). However, when people like say....licupsy (not singleing you out, just using you as a reference) post something with the title of "illegal immigrant plows guy on Ford" or whatever the title is of the post, it tends to make people think that all illegal immigrants are like this. What is the need to point out the race or nationality? Nothing. But since it adds audience members and the media is into selling add space, more viewers (be it in support or in spite) means higher ratings means they can sell their rag or broadcast add space for more.

To Echo Juan's Comments, this is what you can see in tomorrow's paper......

Although I am joking, it would be that way, as it would peak more interest in the story.

Hehehe...
That episode of COPS would be the topic of the biggest thread on here!

What Rock said x100. Everyone in america has broken the law at one point or another. So, once again, the title of the thread is biased/skewed/fucked.

Now, if you were to post something a little more definitive and maybe backed with some statistics, like say...."Why are the majority of prison inmates hispanic" or something to that effect with a quote from somewhere breaking down percentages based on race, maybe we got something.

Otherwise, to add more ambiguity, WE (yes, I am "hispanic") break the law because people with american names lead by example.

Maybe it's just in my area of the country. Try this ... watch the 11:00 news tomorrow night and keep a tally of the last names of the "bad guys". Then see if in your opinion a disproportionate number have a Hispanic sounding name. There would be your statistics. It just seems to me that lately a higher than expected number of wrong doers on the broadcast news have Hispanic sounding last names.

I would guess its a regional thing-- I'm in the northeast and the local tv news has more blacks than hispanics featured in violent crime segments. The 'police blotter' section of the local paper seems to feature more asians and hispanics in their reports. It may also be your own perception, like when you are thinking of buying a certain model car, suddenly you see it everywhere.

Statistically, however, it's true that hispanics are the largest growing group in the US, and the percentage of violent crime committed by hispanics is growing in proportion with their population increase.

Oregon has a pretty high concentration of lower class hispanics.

Seriously, by your reasoning, I can pick up Compton's local news paper and wonder "hmmm, why are so many criminals black?"

Just to further question your sources, on the LA Times a few weeks ago, I read that although hispanics get pulled over more often than whites do, when whites are pulled over, they are more likely than a hispanic to be illegaly possesing.

Maybe we do have a higher concentration of low class Hispanics than the national average. I know that the two big counties around Portland (Multnomah and Washington) over the last 10 years are in the top 12 in the nation for increase in percentage of Hispanic residents.
We also have gang problems here which can be seen by the amount of tagging going on.

That. That is exactly why you hear of so many hispanic surnamed criminals. It's the "in" thing.

News/media has a habit of doing this. It's evident on this forum too.

See, back a few months ago, we had really expensive gas. So there was tons of people EVERYWHERE preaching about peak oil, and speculators, and how we were all doomed because there is no more power. T'was all over the news too. So we had that being talked about here.

Then there was the primary elections. People EVERYWHERE were preaching about being Obama fans for AGES and how they were in it when it wasn't cool. And we got some of that here too.

Then the elections...OMFG this forum sucked during that time.

Inbetween all that, there was talk EVERYWHERE about Britney Spears and Lindsey Lohan et al. We skipped those whores though....nothing too serious about them.

So now, news people are pretty bored, even though shit in the middle east has been stirring and the economy is spiraling into an official recession (still getting another raise in January :fawkd: )

So what do we have now? Border towns and heavily latino/hispanic populated areas talk about illegals. The hicks are still talking about nObama. And everyone else is talking about the holidays, safety of toys, and the economy and how bad it is.

In a few weeks, it will be Obama as president. Then the Big 3 bailout. Eventually something else will happen, and the buzz words will continue.

Iīm hispanic, and i have to admit it: we are lazy asses. Thatīs why we get involved in such problems. Not all of us, but many of us goes to other countries just "to live the dream" and once they get notice that to get the dream you have work hard, they simply decides that stealing ainīt cheating, so thatīs why our hispanic names always are in the bad news. I Really hope this change and we begin the appear in the good news for our efforts and our hard work.

We? You got a frog in your pocket, guy? Hispanics have a strong work ethic. Pochos (aka hispanic americans like myself) that get americanized and become lazy asses because its cheaper to live off welfare are another story. Even then, you get guys like me....more and more every year, actually, that go to school and get their shit straight. Hispanics aren't any lazier than any other race. I see the chile flag and I have chilean friends...ingenieros y todo.
