So I have decided on a remington 700........

I am trying to get a recommendation on what round to choose..... I like the .223 for the price of the round, but I plan on hunting with it, and am worried about fragmentation and tumbling.... I have been hunting with a .270 most my life and looking for a change and a round tht will not cost me 200 bucks to fire at the range......... The 7-08 appeals to me but it is $1.25 everytime you squeeze the trigger and I spend 3 or four hours at the range at a time....

Advice please............

number bug.... 30-06 was my choice. Lots of different ammo for different critters.

300 win mag is second.
7mm shoots real flat.

Learn how to handload!

Did reloads about 15 year ago.... Then the time to money ratio did not pay off... Maybe now that I am older it will be more rewarding.....

Isn't the 30-08 one of the most pricy rounds?

And do you think that the 700 is the end all of bolt actions or are there better choices?

Google snipershide and sign up. The guys on that site know a lot more than me.

I don't know much about rifles but I've heard the 700 is a good one, and there are supposed to be a lot of companies that make accessories for it. The Savage Arms rifles are supposed to be really good and I've heard they have the best from the factory trigger of any bolt action rifle made. A firearm site called budsgunshop.com has a lot of rifles from a couple dozen manufacturers listed and you can see what sort of calibers they come in and prices.

Mine is a Savage 30-06 LE Bull / crowned / savage accu trigger / The factory stock was replaced when the action bolts kept comming loose. Chote sniper stock, I sanded all the crap on the stock down with an orbital sander then texture painted and camo'ed over it. The action is fiberglass bedded. I was still breaking the gun it when I did all the extra stuff so the results are null, but it's a sub 1/4in @ 100 yards.

Trigger is sweet! Action is very stiff and needs to be worked more or smoothed. I'm not wild about the safety. I hunt with a 3-point sling, but the rifle is still VERY heavy.
Good bang for the buck.
