I have never played one of those strategy games- or maybe they're not called that. Games like SIMS- but more involving nation building or world takeover. I guess maybe like a PC version of RISK. I'd like to try one out and I'm wondering if someone can recommend a good one. Basically I'd like to build a civilization on my PC. I know that probably sounds megalomaniacal, but I normally play FPS games and I'm looking for something with more depth and a greater scope.
If anyone can decipher what the hell I'm talking about let me know if you have any suggestions. Thanks.

It's not really a world building type game, but i think the best real time strategy is company of heroes, But this is more of a skirmish based game rather than conquering the world. It's a world war 2 based RTS where you command an american squad of troops from the D-Day landings through the war. I highly recommend it.

Well, not sure how easy they'd be to find, but there is a Risk game and an Axis & Allies game for the computer.
There's also Sid Meier's Civilization series.

Thanks for the replies. I've read some good things about Civilization so I think I'm going to check that out. Again- thanks.

I think you want "Real Time Strategy" or RTS
Some of my favs, even though they are old:
1. Sim City 3000 (the best SimCity IMO)
2. Warcraft 3: Frozen Throne
3. Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2
4. Risk II (for the PC)
5. Axis and Allies
You can find most of these as torrents, so. And there arent that many great RTS for consoles yet --- Battle for Middlearth 2 is pretty much the best one.

civ 4--without a doubt.
I would have to recommend the Civilization series, even though I haven't played them myself. I've read good reviews for the most part on Civilization titles, and they fit the game play style you were asking for. Also, keep your eyes open for Starcraft 2 which will probably be the end-all, greatest of all time, most amazing RTS game to ever be created.
