BIG IN 2008 – Xbox Ultimate
31 DEC 2007

We’ve already had the Xbox 360 Premium and Elite. Both are, of course, fine gaming machines with the best games catalogue in the next-gen field. But come autumn 2008, we predict both will be rendered obsolete by a new model. We'll call it the Xbox Ultimate.

If our guesstimate is correct, this PS3-mauler will benefit from all manner of killer features, including 1080p HDMI output, built-in Wi-Fi, hi-def audio output, cooler 65nm hardware architecture and a near-silent fan.

Once the Xbox IPTV service is in full swing, we're hoping you'll be able to record TV shows to its beefier 320GB hard disk and watch live TV shows via your broadband provider.

But the piece de resistance? Well, fingers-crossed for a built-in HD DVD drive. Let Round 12 with the PS3 commence...

looks like a cool thing but would not expect the HD-DVD drive unless Toshiba can pull a marketing miracle off - since Sony bought, er... I mean brought Warner Brothers over to the Blu-ray camp, folks are seeing it as the end for HD-DVD. The rest of the console idea looks right-on though.

Actually the Hi-Def DVD thing makes me sad because I still think HD-DVD is the better format, but Sony NEEDED to win the format war or they would have been financially destroyed; that POS3 is sure not going to keep them in the black...

Seeing as I have a launch-era Xbox 360, it may well crap out on me before the end of the year (though no sign of that yet knock wood); at that time I may be in the market for something like this new & improved console.

Correct me if i'm wrong i beleive the current xbox's(in the stores) have 65mn chips in them already... I would figure they would put 45nm rather than current..

But hey, if it's working... and helping the 3 red lights... so be it
