NEW YORK (AP) -- The NFL is looking into claims a New England Patriots employee was videotaping signals by Jets coaches on New York's sideline during the season opener.
The investigation was first reported by ESPN.com, which said that NFL security confiscated a video camera and tape from a Patriots employee during New England's 38-14 victory Sunday. The employee was accused of aiming his camera at the Jets' defensive coaches, who were sending signals out to the players, sources told the Web site.
"The rule is that no video recording devices of any kind are permitted to be in use in the coaches' booth, on the field, or in the locker room during the game," the league said in a statement from spokesman Greg Aiello. "Clubs have specifically been reminded in the past that the videotaping of an opponent's offensive or defensive signals on the sidelines is prohibited.
"We are looking into whether the Patriots violated this rule."
The story was first reported on the Web site of Jets Confidential, which said the Jets chief of security alerted NFL security about the issue during the game.
"With anything along those lines, those are all league-related matters, and anything that deals with an issue like this or anything on a team-by-team basis, those all go to the league," coach Eric Mangini said in his news conference Monday.
When asked if the Jets had in fact notified the league, he said: "It's all a league matter."
Patriots spokesman Stacey James declined comment. New England cornerback Ellis Hobbs said he was unaware of the controversy, and unwilling to believe his team had cheated.
"We put too many hours in as individuals and a team to have to go out and cheat," he said. "If it's true, obviously, we're in the wrong. But I'm standing behind my team, my coaches. I don't think we do that stuff."
Last November, the Green Bay Packers had an issue with a man wearing a Patriots staff credential and carrying a video camera on the sidelines at Lambeau Field.
Teams are allowed to have a limited number of their own videographers on the sideline during the game, but they must have a credential that authorizes them to shoot video, and wear a yellow vest. But Packers spokesman Jeff Blumb said the person in question didn't have the right credential and wasn't wearing a yellow vest, so Packers security asked him to put away the camera.

I don't care if I like the team or not...I fucking hate cheaters of all kind.
If it's true, someone in management needs the axe.
If they only fire the guy with the camera then I will lose all respect for a team I did respect.

We'll see what comes out of this after the "investigation". I personally believe that the Pats wouldn't be that stupid, but if it turns out they did try to cheat, that's really shitty.

As much as some people like to hate the Pats, you have to admit they're good enough to not have to cheat.
Which makes it even worse if they did.

I hate Bill Belichick. He was a shitty coach in Cleveland but as soon as he inherited a still shitty Pats team, only to find gold in Brady, all of a sudden he's the most genius coach of all time.
It's called you got to where you are because of your players. You still suck, get over yourself.
I wouldn't put this past him at all.

I agree....why cheat? Tom Brady would have smoked their ass anyway. Despite going out with half of the models & actresses in Hollywood, he's still one of the best in the league on a bad day. Last year the Pats were running on 6 cylinders & was counted out, but look what Tom Brady did against the Colts in the playoffs. Because of Mannings lightning release...they were able to come back & win it. I wanted the Colts to win & had money on them. I bet at the beginning of the playoffs that the Colts would go to the Super Bowl. The only team that has their number & could stop them was the Steelers. But last year was a bad year for them because "Big Ben" was playing fucked up & I think the Steelers finished the season with a dismal 8-8 record!
Personally, for me....the Pats vs Colts game was the real Super Bowl because who ever won that game would go all the way!!!! Shit, that game was more exciting to watch than the "Super Bowl"!

It's true. Fucking cheaters should forfeit the win against the Jets.

As reported by Mort of ESPN:
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has determined that the New England Patriots violated league rules Sunday when they videotaped defensive signals by the New York Jets' coaches, league sources have told ESPN's Chris Mortensen.
NFL security officials confiscated a camera and videotape from Patriots video assistant Matt Estrella on the New England sidelines when it was suspected he was recording the Jets' defensive signals. Sources say the visual evidence confirmed the suspicion.
Goodell is considering severe sanctions, including the possibility of docking the Patriots "multiple draft picks" because it is the competitive violation in the wake of a stern warning to all teams since he became commissioner, the sources said. The Patriots have been suspected in previous incidents.
The Patriots will be allowed an opportunity to present their case by Friday, sources said, most likely via the telephone.
The league also was reviewing a possible violation into the number of radio frequencies the Patriots were using during Sunday's game, sources said. The team did not have a satisfactory explanation when asked about possible irregularities in its communication setup during the game.
Goodell is expected to have a decision no later than Friday but that is not set in stone.
The league refused comment but did confirm Monday that they were reviewing a possible violation by the Patriots.

Yeah, just seen it on the news. This shit can't be tolerated in Pro Football. Big fines, loss of draft picks & may have to forfeit the game against the Jets. Seems fair to me!!!! Crack the whip.! I wonder how that will work, the forfeit deal. I know what it will do for the Pats, but would it be counted as a win for the Jets, or just not be counted altogether. If it's not counted then it means the Jets will be playing a 15 game regular season, that's not fair either!!!!! Not that I'm a big Jets fan, just out for justice.

That's way shitty. I'm so fuckin sick of cheating in sports I want to puke. I understand its a business and the more a team wins, the more money for the franchise yada yada. Somewhere, the competitive spirit needs to kick in though. I don't pay to see a team win by cheating. I pay to see a game that is played fairly and competively.
I'd rather pay 200 bucks for a shitty lion ticket to watch them lose to the Cardinals than 10 bucks to watch the Pats beat the Colts by cheating.

Also like to add, since I'm a die hard Eagles fan, this makes me raise a brow to our loss in Superbowl 39.
I'm not saying they did cheat, but whose to say they didn't.
ya know.. if you arent cheating.. you arent helping your team.
The Pats are fucking stupid for allowing a person in pats garb to go film the other team.. but if you seriously think for one minute that ALL teams arent trying to get some kind of edge over the other team.. you are sadly mistaken. Its part of the game. You cant tell me that all the players arent watching the coaches on the other side for some sort of sign...
Take the guy on 2nd base.. he isnt telling the batter if the catcher is setting up inside or outside with some sort of movement? If he isnt. he isnt helping his team.
Its the same thing.. trying to get that edge. The Pats just got caught because they were way too obvious.

If you pick up on something with your human ability during a game, kudos to you stud.
However, if you use technology that allows you to study your opponents playcalling during halftime, timeouts and just during the game in general....thats just taking it too far.
Teams already get photos from upstairs seconds after a play is ran. Going beyond that cheapens the challenge, and cheats the players, fans, and organizations.
Beat them on the field fair and square...not James Bond style in the locker's.
Goodell warned every team before the season started about this, yet the brash arrogant Patriots thought they were above the rules. I hope he comes down hard on the organization.
One more thing, Brady had to know this was going on since he is the offensive play caller on the field. Golden Boy my ass.

Maybe deny them some TV rights or something?

It makes me mad that all of a sudden because the Pats got caught everyone assumes every game they cheated, and that all their success has been build around cheating. I mean c'mon look at their team they are easily one of the best teams in the league if not the best. Also, how do you know that other teams aren't doing this same thing and they just haven't been caught. I mean you never know people just need to stop jumping to conclusions and assuming that since they got caught this time that all their success and super bowl wins were not well earned.

Again, the thing that irks me about the whole thing is even though Goodell warned all the teams especially the Patriots since they were already suspect, and the fact that they were doing it against the Jets where Eric Mangini (Bill's ex assistant) is the head coach in week number friggin' 1, they still had the balls to give football the good ol' one finger salute.
Maybe Belichick isn't the genius everyone thought he was. Because that was on dumbfuck of a move.

I say Belichick should get 3 games and the team should lose a high draft pick for the next couple of years.
Also, I'm in too many pools. I want some players to have huge games to help me win, though at the same time those huge games will hurt my chances in other leagues.

Yeah, your right. I shouldn't call people names like that. It's deplorable. But I dont wanna suck Brady's dick, i'll let you do it.OK?
You see, it seems to be Pats fans against the world right now. Which is fine. Thats the way we like it. But no one expected to be defending the success of the last 6 years like this. So yeah.. my defenses are up. And I feel as if I dont strike first i'll lose the war.

I'm not going to argue about how good the Pats were/are because they have been and are one of the best teams in the NFL.
But as far as their legacy, yes it's tarnished. Maybe not to all, but to some. Thats all it takes.
They cheated, so they ARE cheaters.
Until more teams get caught, the Pats stand on top of the cheater hill in the NFL.
