Personally I'm Irish. As in actually Irish - not some American that has a great, great, great uncle that was Irish and therefore thinks they are Irish too.

What about the rest of the board? Where you guys all coming from?

A geneologist has me as a direct descendent of a Scotish Duke. I can trace my family back to my great grandfather who was married in Philadelphia in 1856. So I'm at least 4th generation Philadephian. I'm Scotch, Irish, American Indian, PA Dutch and German.

Half my relatives came by way of the bearing straight. They roamed around most of the current south west. One of my grandpas had a weird dream or was tripping on shrooms or something, and led his people further south and settled around Mexico City. They ruled that place for a while until my other relatives showed up.

The other half was mainly from Spain. They had other issues with people from Morrocco and they intermingled. They eventually set sail for the western island known as america when they heard myths of cities with so much gold they paved the streets with it.

When they met, it wasn't really pretty. There was war and eventually damn near genocide. When the war was over, it was neither a triumph nor a defeat it was the painful birth of the mestizo nation that is Mexico today. Luckily some of the spaniards liked the savage poon and my people were born.

After that, more europeans showed up. Some germans who introduced beer to us, God bless them. Some French dudes who got their asses beat by some injuns. More asians. A few niggers to boot.

Me, I was born in So Cal. Mainly raised here. I'm american.

I really hate how you always have to say "the" before Philippines. People don't say they're from the Spain or the Italy or the China... fucking king Felipe and his fucking conquistadores or whatever. :shannon:

I would assume it's the same with The Philippines, isn't that a cluster of islands?

I hate the "the" coz I think it makes it sound more important than it actually is.

I guess you could say you're from America, but people don't really say that, do they?

Yah it's a cluster of islands but a "philippine" doesn't really mean anything, and it definitely doesn't mean island (I think??!?!). So... it's a made up word for a long-forgotten Spanish king.

At least "united states" makes sense.

BlackPearlSpace

aren't they plural because there's many islands, and many states, respectively?

like when people say: the wife. er, no. nothing like that.

The is used with specific nouns. The is required when the noun it refers to represents something that is one of a kind:

The moon circles the earth.

The choice of the proper article or determiner to precede a noun or noun phrase is usually not a problem for writers who have grown up speaking English, nor is it a serious problem for non-native writers whose first language is a romance language such as Spanish. For other writers, though, this can be a considerable obstacle on the way to their mastery of English.

Philippines is a collective noun which is something that can be singular or plural. As it refers to a single country but can also be considered a group of islands.

Maybe Graffin can explain why you don't use it with countries like France. I believe he's an English major.

Classic!!! :) rep

me I'm from The USA (see it's not just you kulots)
specifically, born in Baltimore MD, at six my family traveled & lived internationally (Bahamas & Iran) until my jr. high years, spent in Northern VA (outside DC), then we came to SoCal in my freshman year of HS. That was '78, and I wouldn't ever live anywhere else now!
My ancestry? Mostly Western European chalkies, turn-of-the-century immigrants - English, Irish, German prolly others but that ancestry crap doesn't matter to me - like Juan, I'm an American.

Bred and spread in SoCal!

My house is 4 miles from the hospital I was born in (the same hospital from my ER thread).

Long Beach, CA fo real.

I've lived in San Francisco, Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, but found my way back to da LBC everytime.

You can't beat the SoCal. Within a couple hours of mountains, forest, ocean, deserts, lakes, and a third world country (yep Juanito).

I travel the states a lot. I've been all over the world. And I always appreciate the SoCal more and more everytime I come home.

Decent? My grandparents are from Missouri and Iowa. But my dad was born and raised in SoCal (same high school alma matre), so we got that shit out of our system. Prior America, I'm told, is Ireland (orange) and Scotland (I should keep going back and forth bombing myself then, huh?).
