Just wondering if anyone here has had an experience with the "mini hand cannon". I just got it on saturday and put a couple of rounds through it. What a revolver!!! I can not get over how much power it has, and surprisingly not that bad to shoot. :shoot: Just wonding what someone else's opinion is on the gun.

yep being a .50 fan of just about anything.....
the 500 is a nice big gun. the light loads where pretty good the heavy ones where just tough to shoot. very expensive to shoot almost as much as my 50bmg.
i really dislike the .50 cal. i mean unless you're shooting an m249 or something it seems basically worthless to me. especially in a pistol. i think if you need anything bigger than 9mm in your pocket then you are in over your head and shouldn't be standing around with a pistol in your hand. and this isn't to say you should have a bigger weapon, you should be standing down and letting the authorities handle the situation.
oh and who wants to plink or shoot targets with anything bigger than 9? its just expensive and tough on your wrist.

Well, it's a hunting round, not a defense round. And as far as defensive rounds go, 9mm doesn't cut it in my book. It'll do in a pinch, but a .357 is the best manstopper - there is a lot of data out there about which cartridges are the most effective for self defense. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, would seriously consider a .50 cal. for a defensive weapon.

I dont know I used a .50 cal when I was in the military for a defensive weapon.

9mm is more practical for close range defense. but power is addictive

Relative had it for only 2 weeks. Went on a hunting/camping trip, came back w/ no Smith & Wesson. He apparently sold it because someone told him "the right price". I think his wrist just can't embrace the power. I never got to use it (not enough trust :( ), but I have seen him use it, and it's good revolver nonethless.

I love his hunting rifle though, AHR Classic 550.

guys while I can certainly see your "stopping power" argument against 9's I gotta say - if it's semi-auto, and
I haven't dropped him with one round, it sure isn't going to take much to pump 3+ more rounds into him within
2 seconds...motherfucker will be stopped for sure. So what if I spend a buck or two more to do it?

There's nothing a few 39 cent bullets wouldn't cure.

S&W 500 sounds good for a tinker toy. The compensator is nice thing to have on a powerful handgun. It would have been nice to have on my father's 44mag Blackhawk. I know a few people that split thier foreheads open with the hammer from holding it too loosely. Even with a good grip it jumped up about a foot and a half. He like to carry it as a backup when we went hunting. Dad always used hot and heavy loads in it that shot a flame out about 12 to 16 inches. He did all his own reloading, about 1gr under suggested maximum. Actual its the best way to go if your going to hunt with it. It's a waste of time practicing with light loads. I talked my mom into selling it to a friend of mine. I didn't need it since I wouldn't hunt with it. He's still my friend but he still hasn't shot it yet. He got the gun, the dies and about 500 rounds of dad's hot loads.
I get a kick out of people that carry 44mags as a protection weapon. I seen a construction worker carrying one, must have been having union troubles. Consealed weapons are suppose to be concealed.
As far as the 9mm goes, I like the hollow point rounds I seen the other day when I was checking out the glocks. You just got to remember with a Auto, 6 rounds in the front and 7 rounds in the back is not considered self defense. When they turn and run you got to stop shooting. I seen they have a glock in 357mag that's kind of interesting. A hand gun instructor I know recommends the 380 for women. I say the 9mm, 10mm, or 40 cal in a medium frame for personal protection is good for a man to carry.
Really anything in a revolver over 357mag is overkill. The police around here said the police 38 cal just wasn't enough to drop someone on heavy drugs(going back about ten or so years). I have a nice colt gp100 with about a 1 inch stub nose barrel. If I unload all 5 rounds into someones chest and he don't drop I deserve to get my ass beat.
I think it is ludicrious to discuss good ccw cartridges and not talk about the .45 acp. It is true that a 9mm can certainly do the job in the hands of someone who knows what they are doing, but to say that anyone with a larger round is in over their head doesnt make any sense. I personally prefer the .45 acp or .38 special for my carry weapon and I just feel that the fact that the .45 was left out is very surprising. As for the original question concerning the S&W .500 I have not shot one but have heard good things, I guess i always considered the .454 Casull to be more than enough power and really didnt give the .500 much of a second look.
