Stock exchange logic: For every guy who walks away with an extra dollar in his pocket, some other guy is walking away missing a dollar.

Walk up to the big wheel, and before they spin it, put your money on red #12.

In a casino, it is the house that is the only consistent 'winner', on the stock exchange it is the brokerage houses that are the consistant winners.

Bid,
If you are not to familiar with the stock market I would suggest that you do some investing in mutual funds. High risk/aggressive mutual funds are way safer then one or two or many different diversly allocated stock funds. Currently any international mutual funds are going to be your best bet for the next couple of years with high return, just remember high return can also mean "high loss" So pick wisly and dont make the common mistakes like others do and invest in something that did well in the past! Better yet, talk to a broker! =)

if you're just getting started with investing, diversification is the name of the game. in other words, don't put all your eggs ($$) in one basket (one stock)

you should consider an index fund tied to the S&P 500 for example
