I'm in the market for a new slug gun for hunting whitetail in OH, WV & PA. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions or information on this subject. The following is a list of secifications I would like:

Full-Length-Rifled-Barrel
Rifle Sites and/or Scope
Interchangable Turkey Barrel
Semi-Automatic
Camoflage Finish (preferably RealTree Hardwoods HD)

Any info at all would be appreciated.

Oh, and does anyone have recommendations for High-Velocity Sabot Slugs?

Thanks Guys!

I hunt Wi whitetails in wood lots. currently use a remington 870 12 ga with rifeled slug barrel. 12 ga is a large piece of lead and at short distances can cause penetration problems. I would reccommend a 20 gauge remington semi automatic with a red dot scope. 20 gauge shoots flatter and has less lead for better penetration. All saboted slugs seem to have different ballastics and when changing brands need to re-sight. I use winchester magnum saboted slugs and found them to shoot straight and flat.

Thanks for the reply bergie!

How does the size of the slug affect penetration at short distances?
I would think the closer the deer is, the more horizontal velocity the slug still has and along with the larger the slug, it would cause more damage and penetration.

I'm not an expert, just curious.

thats why a 12 gauge has more knockdown power a 20 gauge is better at a longer distance but your gonna have to chase down your kill..
i'm no expert but thats what i've been told

Does anyone know of a reputable website that lists these specifications we are speaking just any good technical info at all? Just because I'm a stickler for details.

Check out the ammo's manufactures website and look at the ballistics for the specific shells. I did some quick looking on winchesters web site, and found that the 12 gauge chambered in 3" has better ballistics than the 20 gauge in 3" chamber. If I was the one looking for a new gun like that I would go with the 12 guage. It will have more reach out than the 20 guage. The amount of energy is also carried further with the 12 than the 20. Even though the 20 will shoot flatter it does not have the range that the 12 has. Go with the 12 in 3" chamber and you won't be dissapointed, unless you are recoil shy.

semi-auto is illegal for big game in PA. i'm almost positive about this.

oh shit, i just saw how old this thread is. but regardless, you should always check the laws in the state you are in before purchasing your firearm for a specific purpose.

1) semi-autos may not be legal in Pa, make sure you check the deer regulations which are differant than small game where semi-shotguns are.
2) i would go with a full rifled barrel, a scoped 20 single shot using the latest sabot type slug is the hot item, less kick, shots flatter, and kills just fine.
3) penetration is fine with a 12g slug at normal ranges, a slug is slow moving but contains a large amount of energy due to its very heavy weight (compared to a rifle ). the original elephant guns were basically a slug gun, they did just fine on dangerous game.

Semi-autos are illegal for deer in PA. No doubt on that.

Rem 870. Popular, good, reliable slug gun. Can interchange the barrels as well for turkey or small game.
