| Against The Grain — Wild Card weekend Against The Grain — Wild Card weekend
A weekly NFL breakdown that heads in the opposite direction of your average pro football analysis.
1. Do the Cardinals’ and Chargers’ wins mean the NFC and AFC West were better than we thought? Not at all. If homefield advantage went to the team with the best record in the wild-card round, Arizona and San Diego would both be home now. Why are owners afraid to change that rule? This isn’t the BCS and some fictional title. This is the NFL and the playoff system should be fair.
2. Chad Pennington’s performance on Sunday validates the Jets’ decision to jettison him for Brett Favre. Pennington does a lot of things well and will take you to a certain point. But come the postseason, he runs into defenses that are too good to beat with his conservative style. Pennington was never going to lead New York to the Super Bowl. Favre wasn’t the answer for the Jets either, but at least they can start over now, both at head coach and quarterback.
